Two years ago, who would have guessed how much time we’d all be spending on zoom? Not just to work and keep in touch, but also to exercise. Zoom Pilates has now become the ‘norm’ for many people, even though studios have reopened. Whilst not wishing to detract from the many benefits of in-person classes, exercising online at home does have many plus points.
Besides saving time, it doesn’t involve any travel and is motivating. But, an overwhelming benefit is that our beloved pets can join in too. In fact some of the most humorous moments have involved pets and Pilates. I’ve watched a kitten running up and down the curtains, while its owner was facing the other way, a dog lying on top of its owner whilst she was trying to get into a table top position and a playful puppy contentedly chewing the corner of a Pilates mat!! Also pets are often very curious about what they’re watching on a phone or tablet and I’ve seen a lot of furry close ups – both back and front ends!
Our pets do seem to enjoy zoom classes, as much as we do. Cats and dogs of all shapes and sizes are able to get involved, have fun and keep their owners in sight. Older dogs seem to be soothed by the gentle rhythms of exercise and when not muted, contented snores can often be heard. Younger, more enthusiastic pets often find novel ways to take part. Balancing on a roller is extra challenging when a pet is trying to join you. Lifting weights with a puppy clinging on, makes the exercise very demanding. And the Pilates 100 is perfect for your pooch to sit in a strategic position so your abs really get a workout.
So when you’re lying on your back, trying to contort your body into a bridge shape, with a rubber ball clenched between your thighs and your pet sitting on your stomach, just stare into their eyes and stay in position for a bit longer. You’ll be building strength, muscle tone and enjoying some great exercise together.
